| Don't be fooled by the fact that the average vote for this film is just above 5/10: either most voters didn't "get" it or, as I suspect, just didn't like it. Along much the same lines as THE LORDS OF DISCIPLINE, the main differences are that the film is set in an Ivy League college, and that students strive to be accepted into 'The Skulls', rather than fear 'The Ten' in DISCIPLINE. Both are secret societies, a phenomenon that rarely occurs in Australia (other than groups like the Freemasons, etc...) and explores what must eventually happen to any such microcosm that attempts to distance itself and rise above the laws of the real world. What struck me about this film, vaguely as I was watching it but distinctly after I'd seen the deleted scenes on the DVD version, was that the editing was absolutely brilliant. Gone was every scene that even mildly went on a tangent and created another sub-story - this way, the main story could be told concisely and very well, without having to worry about tying off too many loose ends. (Incidentally, the next night I saw ON THE BEACH on free-to-air TV - it's remarkable to note the differences in editing; the first two hours of ON THE BEACH were not required.) Watch this film, particularly if you're a fan of the genre, or even if you liked DEAD POETS SOCIETY (etc...) - you shouldn't be disappointed! 7/10 |
