The Thing is a 1982 science fiction film, directed by John Carpenter. Ostensibly a remake of the 1951 Howard Hawks film The Thing from Another World, Carpenter’s film is actually more faithful to the original novella, “Who Goes There?” by John W. Campbell, Jr. (writing under the pseudonym of Don A. Stuart). The screenplay was written by Bill Lancaster. The film’s musical score was composed by Ennio Morricone, a rare instance of Carpenter not scoring one of his own films. Carpenter considers the film to be the first part of his Apocalypse Trilogy, followed by 1987’s Prince of Darkness and 1995’s In the Mouth of Madness.
An American Antarctic research station is infiltrated by an alien creature with the ability to perfectly imitate any organic life-form that it physically contacts. The crew of the station come to distrust each other as they cannot discern who is human and who is not. One by one they are killed, either by being transformed into the creature or by each other.
The crew realize that if the creature were to reach the outside world, it would devour all life on Earth in approx 27,000 hours (Just over three years). Although they destroy a vessel the creature was secretly building, the crew are ultimately forced to destroy the station in order to kill it, even if it means their own demise. In the end, there are only two survivors—neither of whom is sure if the other is human, but both too weak to fight. In addition, it is hinted that one member of the facility, who was transformed into the creature may have survived. By that time, the creature had been hoping to be frozen into the ice so that it would be unearthed in the future to begin another unholy rampage. |

I am ashamed to say it, but I have to admit, the first time I saw this film was only about a year ago. After seeing it, I immediately rushed out and bought the DVD collectors' edition and have watched it many times since.
The film is terrific on many levels. It works as your straight monster or action type film, as a horror/sci-fi and also as a very intriguing look into the human psyche. The incredible sense of paranoia, mistrust and fear, lent not only by Carpenter's direction (which is stunning) but also by the incredible acting of the cast in general. Kurt Russell (obviously) is spectacularly understated in the lead role of MacReady, and, as a direct result he "feels" like a real person, rather than a hollywood "all american hero". The other cast members all carry off their roles with style, and the net result is an intensely believable atmosphere, and a truly fantastic film. |
