Lets face it, Adam Sandler's movies are never really "Oscar-worthy" or will go down in the history of cinema as the greatest, but they are usually fun, hilarious and charming, a lot like Sandler himself. He's just an actor that likes to do projects that he finds entertaining. That usually contain immature jokes, sweet moments and were he always gets the girl, but aren't all romantic comedies like that from time to time?
A remake of the 1936 Frank Capra film "Mr. Deeds Goes to Town", the story is about a young, good-hearted man named Longfellow Deeds (Sandler) who runs a pizzeria in New Hamsphire and likes to write greeting cards on his spare time. He later finds out that his rich, estranged uncle dies at 82, and leaves him 40 billion dollars. Which makes him leave New Hampshire and head to New York City. Inside Access reporter Babe Bennett (Winona Ryder) goes under disguise as an Iowan school nurse named "Pam Dawson" and goes on dates with him in order to get a good story. She later falls in love with his kind hearted personality, which makes her feel guilty about what shes done to him. Like a typical "fish out of water" story, he is just a small town, nice guy surrounded by rude, money hungry New Yorkers.
Sandler is great as the lead character, and Winona is charming as the doe eyed Babe/Pam. I also loved John Turturro's character Emilio, the Spanish butler with a foot fetish, who is also quick on his feet. Overall, a sweet, feel-good movie that I've watched at least a million times, that is good for a boring Friday night when you have a few friends over. 7/10 |
