I have so far only watched the first disc in the series, but i am impressed both by the quality of the imagery, and by the immense range of land covered. It is just amazing! Go BBC! Thanks, UK taxpayers.
Since the good things about the series are already covered in detail by other posters, I'll just mention a few things that could have made the series a lot better and interesting to watch.
The biggest gripe I have is the lack of a perspective. Following graphic scenes of animals in pretty setting is okay by itself as a pastime. However, some leitmotif beside 'we did it for the first time' would have been nice.
Compare this with, say, Sagan's Cosmos -- there are pretty pictures there as well, but there is also the unifying insight that our understanding of the cosmos is really a way to understand ourselves. Sadly, no such thing in this series. Here the viewer is just stuffed with imagery and rather superficial commentary.
I was also bothered by the abrupt and unexplained switches between places and stories (one's looking at bears in America and then suddenly switches to elephants in Africa, etc.). Some switches are really arbitrary, and make it hard to follow some episodes.
At least in the first five episodes, the most abundant animal on Earth is sorely missing. We see no people there except the occasional glimpse of the crew. It is as if we're somehow not part of this planet, despite the fact that we have evolved here just as the rest of the animals we see, share the same chemistry and genes, and are influenced by and affecting the environment significantly.
All in all, this is fascinating to watch, but if you want to watch it with your kids, you better prepare the commentary by yourself.
I really hope they use someone with greater insight to write the commentary for the second edition. I wouldn't even mind the same footage :)
